这不是一首寻常的四重奏——既不是弦乐四重奏也不是钢琴四重奏，而是小提琴、单簧管、大提琴和钢琴的四重奏。如此古怪的搭配，并非梅西安有意标新立异，实在是出于无奈。这部作品作于写于1940年。这部作品是为他困难时期遇到的音乐家–大提琴家艾蒂安·帕斯基耶、单簧管家亨利·阿科卡、小提琴家让·勒布雷尔和梅西安本人（钢琴）而写的，其中贯穿了梅西安对鸟鸣和对上帝的赞美。 作品一共50分钟，8个乐章。丹麦国家交响乐团首席Christina Åstrand、首席单簧管演奏家Johnny Teyssier和同为首席大提琴演奏家的Henrik Dam Thomsen与丹麦的钢琴家Per Salo一起，在音乐会上演奏了这首作品。专辑以DXD 352.8kHz/32bit录制
