“大协奏曲”(concerto grosso,复数为concerti grossi),是巴洛克音乐爱好者非常喜爱的体裁之一,是巴洛克时期音乐的迷人的演奏形式。它和后来古典时期、浪漫时期的“协奏曲”(concerto)最大的不同是:协奏曲一般是一件独奏乐器和一支乐队的演奏,虽然有少数是一件以上的独奏乐器,比如勃拉姆斯的“双重协奏曲”是一把小提琴和一把大提琴加乐队,而贝多芬著名的“三重协奏曲”是一把小提琴、一把大提琴、一架钢琴加乐队,但绝大多数“协奏曲”都是一件独奏乐器和乐队之间的演奏。而巴洛克时期的所谓大协奏曲,却是两件或三件的独奏乐器(也可更多),和一支乐队进行演奏(当时的乐队编制都很小)。br />
亨德尔的大协奏曲有两部Op.3/Op.6。其中Op.6 为12首,Op.3为6首,后人新发现了一首Op3.4a加进去,于是共为7首。大协奏曲Op.3由于加强了双簧管的表现而也称为《双簧管协奏曲》,但是他的配器远比管风琴协奏曲之类的“类清唱剧“作品复杂有趣的多。除了双簧管外,独奏小提琴、大提琴、长笛、管风琴等都轮番上阵有不错的表现。亨德尔的这套作品足以显示出他作为巴洛克时代器乐协奏曲作曲家分庭抗礼的实力。他那种通过抒情而接近神的虔诚努力依然浓郁,比发散的维瓦尔弟协奏曲主题更加明确,比严谨的巴赫《勃兰登堡》更加富有人情味。
