该专辑是巴洛克乐团La Petite Bande 和Sigiswald Kuijken录制的著名的巴赫杰作。该乐团在全球享有盛誉,旨在获得最为真实的声音。Kuijken和他团队里的音乐家和歌手们再一次以庄严的方式实现了这一目标。
Sigiswald Kuijken非常了解巴赫的《马太受难曲》,他和La Petite Bande乐团在全世界各地都演出了这部作品。二十年前,La Petite Bande(当时指挥家是Gustav Leonhardt,Kuijken演奏)首次录制了《马太受难曲》,这是一个由独奏家、室内乐团和一个根据管弦乐谱曲加以调整而成的录音。从那以后,Kuijken对这部作品的看法发生了很大的变化。在过去几十年中,突破性的音乐作品使得他在不使用指挥的情况下严重脱离他的合奏团。以至于到现在已经没有了真正的合唱团,独奏家也同时表演合唱部分。在《马太受难曲》大多数的表演中都会使用的童声合唱团在这里被一个单独的女高音所取代。
此外,该专辑的录制通过使用真实的乐器和原创的演奏方式,无论在演绎还是音质方面,La Petite Bande都致力于尽可能忠实地重振巴洛克音乐,而不会陷入僵化的学术教条。
